Sutherland House School student Emelie, who is interested in costume design and fashion, recently completed work experience at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham.

Emelie has a keen interest in costume design and fashion, so she was thrilled when she was invited to join the Wardrobe department of the Theatre Royal in Nottingham.

Emelie's work experience took place while TV's fashionista Gok Wan was performing his new pantomime at the venue, also featuring comedian Paul Chuckle and comedy ventriloquist Steve Hewlett among other theatre stars.

Over two days, Emelie was given a behind-the-scenes look at theatre life and the hard work that goes on backstage to make the magic happen.

She was involved in the redesign of one of Gok Wan's costumes. She even got to meet the man himself.

Emelie and the other work experience students were also invited to watch the dress rehearsal on the Friday before opening night, which was for invited guests only.

Huge thanks to Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall Nottingham and all other organisations who come forward and offer work experience to our young people.

Scale making

It makes a life-shaping difference for students like Emelie.

This year, a report on Autism and Employment found that around 680,000 people of working age with an autism diagnosis in the UK, but just 30% of those are employed.

CEO of Autism East Midlands, Jane Howson, said:

It is so important that young people are given meaningful opportunities for work experience. If we work together as a community, we can change the statistics on employment and autism.
